Log book 30/10/17

In today's lesson we began by discussing what politics is and what political theatre is. The overall conclusion was that politics is the debates and ways that the government and higher powers tackle the issues that we have in society, the google definition for politics is the activities of governments concerning the political relation between states and the activities aimed at improving the lives of the citizens of the states. Political theatre is theatre that addresses the issues of society and aims to draw attention and fix those issues. Political theatre aims to educate people to the issues of the world and fix the issues by giving others knowledge of them.

We then discussed news stories we were passionate about which included the Harvey Weinstein case as it is something very current that effects people in our chosen career field and could effect us in the future. The main aim of this was to start opening us up to the different political issues and creating opinionated actors for our performances as even in a story like Harvey Weinstein where it is just wrong what he did there were still different opinions in the room that certain people were disregarding the way the women would feel and focusing too much on the effects on the industry and his business profiting. We had to try to look at the issues as unemotionally as possible and give two sides to the argument.

We then did an exercise to see our views on different political issues one side of the room was strongly agree and the other side was strongly disagree, we were given a statement and asked to stand where in the room we felt our views applied to that statement for example one statement was cannabis is worse for your body than alcohol and people who disagreed stood close to the wall those who were unsure stood in the middle and those who agreed stood against the other wall. We discovered that as a class our views can drastically differ on some topics and there will be a wide spread of people across the room but on other topics we have quite similar views, I also noticed that most of us have quite liberal or left wing views which shows how young people think and view situations. The fact we have a lot of different opinions in the class can come in handy for this unit as it allows for debate and political openness to other sides.

After this we did an exercise where we would get into groups of a certain size and create an inanimate object like a bowl or a motor bike and then keep walking around create a new group and a new object and keep moving ext. We then got into groups of 6 and created an inanimate object but gave it a personality, my group created a sexy bed which was Laila's idea. This was to teach us about Brecht's theory of the verfremdungseffekt.

This is where you give an ordinary object a personality or a characteristic that is contradictory to change the viewers belief of the object and cause them to think and be critical of the object instead of allowing it to pass by them creating an effective lasting impact.

lastly we read some of the play Cathy which we are performing later in the term which is about a woman being evicted from her home and becoming homeless.
